Advanced Chip Design and Research Center

ADVANCING SEMICONDUCTOR INNOVATION

The Advanced Chip Design Research Center (ACDRC) aims to foster innovation and collaboration in semiconductor research and education between Taiwan and the Czech Republic.

No description

The Advanced Chip Design Research Center (ACDRC) is established under the Taiwan-Czech Democratic Partners Supply Chain Resilience and Capacity Building Cooperation Plan for 2022-2026. The center is dedicated to cultivating integrated circuit design talent across various fields and fostering the development of the semiconductor industry ecosystem in the Czech Republic.

Our team

This project is a collaborative effort between Taiwanese and Czech organizations, specifically NARLabs and CyberSecurityHubcz, which serves as the main execution unit, complemented by a consortium that includes the Czech Technical University, Masaryk University and Brno University of Technology.

PROJECT DETAILS

The project has two main pillars – education and research – while also strengthening the bond between Taiwan’s semiconductor industry and the Czech Republic.

No description

The project's strategic significance is profound, as semiconductor technology is a driving force behind the tech industry and a crucial factor in global industrial transformation.

Education Pillar

Education Pillar
Preparing
Experts for Future

This pillar will provide advanced training in semiconductor technology and chip design. It will build on the foundations acquired in the Master's and PhD studies at Czech universities.

Education Activities

Involvement of experts
Collaboration with Czech and Taiwanese academics, along with industry experts from companies such as Codasip, OnSemi and ST Microelectronics, will be conducted through intensive week-long summer or winter schools in the Czech Republic for master's and PhD students and industry personnel.

Advanced courses
Offering specialized courses and winter/summer schools for advanced integrated circuit designers, including training on specific design sets, with hybrid lectures given by experts from Taiwan and the Czech Republic.

ACDRC will contribute to travel, accommodation and related expenses for participants in events such as TSRI summer schools.

Internship programme
An internship program will be established in collaboration with industry partners in the Czech Republic to facilitate the integration of young talent into the semiconductor industry.

Study materials
We will prepare relevant study materials (available through Courseware or Moodle) for the 2025 courses.

Internships for PhD students
An internship programme will be developed in collaboration with industrial partners in the Czech Republic to facilitate the integration of young talent into the semiconductor industry. The internships will take place in the Czech Republic and Taiwan - 3 PhD students at Jmem Tek, 2 at NCU and 1 at NCHU.

We plan to increase the number of students on both sides.

Educational events
Organize special educational events on semiconductor supply chain risks, including online lectures and on-site seminars, coordinated with SCRC.

Outreach to high school students
Promotion of lectures at secondary schools to encourage students to study electronics at Czech universities.

Planned Events and Workshops for 2025

Thematic workshops
- BioChip
- AI for the automotive industry
- EDA tools

Hands-on courses on semiconductor device preparation and characterization
- in the Semiconductor Laboratory - clean rooms for silicon technology and microelectronics at Masaryk University in Brno
- newly available for other academic and industrial entities

We are also preparing further intensive workshops and summer schools. Keep an eye on our calendar of events.

Research Pillar

Research Pillar
Cultivating
Advanced Expertise

Research in semiconductor technology and integrated circuit design will be developed under this pillar. It aims to build on existing knowledge and expertise in this field and to foster innovation and collaboration between academia and industry.

Main Research Topics

- Cyber Security IC
- Backend Electric Automation Tool for IC Design
- AI on Chip
- Bio-Chip
- SiC Quality Control and Testing Equipment (or Laser Application)

Application Domains

- semiconductor manufacturing in the Czech Republic, specifically SiC applications

- automotive industry: digital and analogue chips

- renewables and energy: power electronics

- electronics: advanced power management for portable devices and low-power designs for battery-powered applications

- biomedical applications: novel sensors and signal processing methods for healthcare, fitness and aging populations (including signal processing chip design, digital design, FPGAs and AD/DA converters)

- telecommunications industry: radio frequency chip design

- applications in the space sector

- chip design tools industry: automation of RISC-V and backend integrated circuit design based on machine learning

Current Research Projects

Embedded AI processor for automotive applications
Development of an FPGA-based processor for automotive applications with a focus on low power, efficiency and performance. The processor will be able to process image signals and recognize objects, which will support the wider use of intelligent systems in the automotive industry in the Czech Republic and Europe.

Hardware safety modules
Development of advanced security technologies, including:
- MSOTP (multi-state one-time programmable memory) for secure data storage
- PUF (physical unclonable function) for creating unique, unforgeable encryption keys
- Post-quantum cryptography (PQC) to protect against future quantum computing threats

The goal is to create a PUF-based PQC subsystem, which will be the first solution of its kind on the market to provide advanced protection for sensitive data. The development includes optimization of stability, randomness and circuit performance, ending with a verification phase to meet commercial standards.

Laser processing of SiC wafers
Development of a new technology for laser grinding and modification of silicon carbide (SiC) wafers for the production of high performance semiconductor devices. The aim is to optimise the wafer thinning process using laser radiation with suitable parameters (wavelength, pulse width, energy, repetition rate). The collaboration between Taiwan and the Czech Republic will enable a combination of cutting-edge technological development and advanced quality control through X-ray diffraction rocking curve and advanced crystal defect visualisation methods.

AI and optimization for electronic design automation (EDA)
Collaborative research and development of tools for electronic design automation (EDA) with a focus on mixed-signal design and chip reliability. The project will combine the know-how of academic institutions and industrial partners from Taiwan and the Czech Republic. The aim is to improve design methods in the areas of automotive electronics and satellite technology, where performance, power consumption and long-term chip reliability are key factors.

Internships

ACDRC educational projects will include international internships and exchange visits for Ph.D. students between the Czech Republic and Taiwan. The students will have the opportunity to participate in semiconductor technology development and applied research projects both in Czech laboratories and in Taiwan, for example at Jmem Tek, NCU and NCHU institutions.
